Vermicompost Training

We conducted the training of vermicompost for 15 women from different families with agriculture backgrounds. After the training, the participants will be able to learn about vermiculture, vermicompost, the management of waste, and its importance for 3days followed by 3months of observation and mentoring.

Vermicomposting is the process of making organic compost, by using specific earthworms. vermicompost is earthworm excrement, called castings, which can improve the biological, chemical, and physical properties of the soil. The chemical secretions in the earthworm’s digestive tract help break down soil and organic matter, so the castings contain more nutrients that are immediately available to plants. Red earthworm species, like Eisenia Foetida, are most efficient in compost making.

This project took place in ward number 6, Kirtipur Municipality. Many families depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Some have small vegetable gardens where they produce local vegetables and sell them in the market and some have bigger land for agriculture for their business purposes. Many farmers face the challenge of getting enough compost for their farms when required. Due to this, they have to forcefully depend on chemical fertilizers most of the time.
